The Picador Countdown. Number 3.

Vanessa Diffenbaugh

If this was an Olympic event we would be into the medal winners! And the bronze medal goes to……..Picador’s best sellers: Number 3. ‘The Language of Flowers’ – Vanessa Diffenbaugh

I rated this among my top 3 international fiction books of 2011 (see earlier blog). It is an incredibly moving love story full of moments of great humour, great pathos and great beauty. After a childhood spent in the foster care system Victoria Jones knows a lot about grief, mistrust and solitude but little about love. She does know the language of flowers and it is with flowers that she and Grant tentatively reach out to one another. The story alternates between the present and Victoria’s past. Both these strands are so compelling that there is a temptation to skip chapters to find out what happens/happened next. All right, I confess, I did!
