Philip Bray remembers Margaret Olley

Margaret Olley by Barry Pearce

The updated edition of Barry Pearce’s magnificent book on Margaret Olley , full of wonderful images of her paintings, has just arrived in store as has an updated edition of Meg Stewart’s biography of Margaret, ‘Far From a Still Life’. They remind me of some delightful hours I spent being shown around the Art Gallery of NSW by Margaret. Talk about a pleasure and a privilege!

The close relationship she had with Ed Capon could not have been more obvious and I was stunned to learn of just how many wonderful donations she had made to the gallery. Her somewhat ascerbic comment on an exhibition of installation art echoed my own feelings, “What a waste of wall space!”

‘Margaret Olley’ by Barry Pearce is $120 and ‘Far From a Still Life’ is $29.95.
