Watching the footy with a Miles Franklin listed author

Favel Parrett

‘Past The Shallows’ by Favel Parrett has been deservedly long-listed for this year’s Miles Franklin Award and I would expect it to make the short-list too! I had the pleasure of meeting Favel over dinner prior to her book being published and she is a delightful person. She grew up in Tasmania, lives in Melbourne, loves the beach and barracks for the AFL team The Western Bulldogs. I grew up in Melbourne and remain a fan of St. Kilda. We decided we should go together to watch our teams do battle so I look like having a weekend in Melbourne in July! May the best team win! And more importantly may it be a good game, I’m sure it will be a fun day.

I loved ‘Past The Shallows’. Set on the remote south coast of Tasmania it is a powerful and hauntingly beautiful novel telling the story of three brothers. When you read it, and you must, you will laugh and you will cry. You will love the wonderful descriptions of  the beach and the ocean, of the shark eggs and cuttlefish bones and the kelpie pup.

Author Robert Drewe commented, “So real, so true – this novel sweeps you away in its tide.”
