Miles Franklin Longlist. Local authors star!

This year’s Miles Franklin Award (Australia’s premier literary prize) longlist has just been announced and includes books from no less than four local authors!

Apart from the locals the list includes other books which we loved and have been recommending and, a little embarrassingly, a few which we haven’t caught up with yet. The judges will have a tough task choosing just one winner from a list which proves yet again that Australia is hugely blessed with writing talents.

The list in alphabetical order of author is: Blood – Tony Birch, The Spirit of Progress – Steven Carroll, Spirit House – Mark Dapin (local author), The Precipice – Virginia Duigan (local), All That I Am – Anna Funder , Sarah Thornhill – Kate Grenville (local), Five bells – Gail Jones, Autumn Laing – Alex Miller, Cold Light – Frank Moorhouse (local), Past The Shallows – Favel Parrett, The Street Sweeper – Elliot Perlman and Animal People – Charlotte Wood.

I’ve been a bit cheeky including Frank Moorhouse as a local. He did live in Balmain for a considerable time but more recently has been residing elsewhere. But then I didn’t include Charlotte Wood who lives close by in the inner-west!

Philip Bray.
