Read slowly, with pleasure

The Paper Garden Mrs Delany (Begins her Life’s Work) At 72 by Molly Peacock

I have been eyeing off this luscious looking book for several months. Its black cover with red poppy design (one of the many fine examples of Mrs Delany’s work found throughout the book) has been nodding and beckoning me to enter this fascinating 18th century world.

I have finally succumbed.

Molly Peacock litters her biography of Mary Granville Pendarves Delany (1700- 1788) with metaphors, similes and poetry at every turn. Everything about this delightful memoir is generous, sumptuous and gorgeous. You get the idea!

Peacock describes Delany’s collages with love and attention to detail – she brings each piece to life. She draws on Delany’s letters and memoirs to recreate her life in all its richness and despair.

ThePaperGardenis a book to read slowly, with pleasure. This is the perfect gift for anyone who loves traditional arts, historical story-telling and has a passion for women’s issues.
